Flash fiction is a must-know art for all writers. In this article, I'm going to explain why, as well as give you access to something kind of awesome.

It is no secret that today’s world craves fast knowledge. Every extra click on the content we want leads to fewer reads.

A button click seems so minuscule to the average writer, but to every content marketer, we know the truth. People hate to click. If they have to click, then their one and only click should get the exactly the information they need.

Whether you are a blogger, social media guru, author, or copywriter, you must learn today’s audience and their needs to create content that converts.



Every writer will immediately say, “Well, it’s not about the reads or views.”

As a writer, I call bullshit.

Every writer, deep down, craves to have their work devoured. It’s a natural instinct, and you shouldn’t run away from it because it feels “egotistical”.  Just like a YouTuber or social media influencer, a writer’s stories survive on views.

It doesn’t matter how great your story is if you aren’t taking your audience’s needs into consideration.

No, I’m not saying to never write what you want to write. But I am saying that (a) what you write should be promoted to the right audience, and (b) your audience shouldn’t have an issue getting to your stories. Sounds pretty basic, right?

Well, with how convoluted things have gotten, it can be hard to know exactly what to produce.

You will hear a lot of business-gurus say, “Write what your audience wants.” That’s completely true. Just because your writing isn’t resonating with the audience you have doesn’t mean your writing is bad; it just means your not branding and promoting yourself and your work accurately.

You’re attracting the wrong readers.

So, how do you fix this? We talk about branding a lot on this blog, so rather than going into branding and why it’s important, I want to speak to you about the type of writing that will be most powerful in 2019. You need to study flash fiction.


Flash fiction is dangerous — it asks the writer to surrender all safety nets and let a mere smattering of sentences speak for themselves. But it can also be extremely rewarding, if done right.

Study Flash Fiction As Unknown Territory – No Matter How Much of a Grammar-Guru You May Be.

This is crucial. Flash fiction is different from other prose, in that it’s all about telling a story in as few words as possible. That means every word counts.

“No fluff or flowery details,” as my scriptwriting teachers would say in college. 

Flash fiction is about “showing” rather than “telling”. While this isn’t always the case in some published works of flash fiction, you will make a bigger, better impact with your story if you focus on action

Why Should I Learn This?

Remember how I said today’s society doesn’t like clicks? Now, I am not saying ditch long-form writing. In fact, some long-form writing does extremely well when portrayed to the right audience. HOWEVER – flash fiction is a great way to boost your social media presence and create ads for your longer content.

For example, think of your longer story. Then, take one specific “scene” from that story that (a) has a great hook and (b) has a beginning, middle and end.

Yes, you can be ambiguous, but there should be room for your reader to know the following:

  • the style of writing they can expect from the whole story (if there is more)
  • who their main character(s) is/are
  • what the overarching theme may be for the story/what the protagonist’s motivation is
  • what type of conflict your protagonist may be facing

I know. You’re probably thinking how you can possibly get that across in as little as a tweet. Well, take a look at this famous example, and you tell me if it can’t be done (because it can):

For sale: baby shoes, never worn.

Earnest Hemingway

While you certainly have some question marks, such as if this ad was written by a male or female, you get a whole story from these six little yet powerful words.

  • We know Hemingway – if he were to have written more – likely would have written something with, at the very least, a somber undertone.
  • We know our main character is someone who has more than likely lost their child
  • We know that the protagonist’s motivation may be to move on from this tragedy, seeing as they are trying to get rid of the shoes
  • And, we know the conflict to be that of losing a child

Six words. That’s it. 

It fits in a tweet, an Instagram caption – hell – you could make a social media tile with the six words as a quote on top of an image, and you could use it as an ad across social channels to promote the link to the full story.

This is the power of flash fiction.



How Can I Learn It?

First, you should know that learning flash fiction will either be a pain in the ass or it will come naturally. There is no in between. Likely, you’ll suck at first. Most writers do, considering most are taught all their lives to never spare a detail.
