When I moved down to Orlando, FL in July 2015, I weighed about 125 lbs. Now, only 9 months later, I weigh 130 lbs. However, three weeks ago, I weighed almost 140 lbs. With all the statistics out of the way, you may be wondering how I managed to lose 9 lbs. in three weeks, and my answer is black coffee.

I’d tried everything: working out hard core, or just my core, and I even tried an array of diet plans and protein shakes. When I stumbled upon an article on how those who drink 2 to 3 cups of black coffee are less likely to get diabetes, I knew I had to try it out, and here I am – 9 lbs. lighter.

The key is BLACK coffee – no added sugar or milk, ladies and gents. Throw out your daily Starbucks or Dunkin routine, and settle for a cheaper, less sugary substance. Take your coffee black.

As an ex-Starbucks loving gal, I know the pain you must’ve felt after reading that helpful hint. Trust me, I didn’t believe it either, until I stepped onto my scale and saw I lost three pounds in a week from JUST drinking plain, black coffee. I hadn’t changed my diet or my workouts. Yet, I still lost weight. It took everything in me to give black coffee a chance. I hated it, at first. It was bitter and disgusting, but just like anything else in life, I learned to adapt. My taste buds adjusted after a few days, and I found myself waking up every morning craving black coffee. Now, if I ever stop in Starbucks, I often find myself feeling very sick after one of their drinks. They’re too sugary for me, now, and it made it that much easier to just quit drinking there altogether. So far, switching my coffee has been the best change in my diet.

However, you may be wondering how black coffee can help you knock off 10 lbs.? It’s all about its caffeine base.

  • Caffeine is a natural appetite suppressor. Coffee will reduce your appetite for a little bit and keep you from grabbing that extra snack.
  • Caffeine aids in calorie burning. It can stimulate thermogenesis, which is the way your body generate heat to help digest food.
  • Caffeine, naturally, will give you an energy boost. You’ll want to get up and move around, which will aid in calorie burning too.
  • Coffee is a laxative, in a way. It will clean you out a bit. So, don’t be surprised if you need to visit the bathroom about an hour after your cup. However, it will rid you of unwanted water weight.

Coffee is something that can help you lose weight, BUT be warned:

  • Drinking too much caffeine can up your heart rate, make you feel jittery, and can even make you feel nauseous.
  • Try not to drink more than 200 mg of caffeine a day – about 2 cups.
  • Pay attention to your brews! Some coffee brews have more caffeine than others. Keep that in mind when your measuring how many cups to have. You may only be able to drink one, because one may have the 200 mg in it.
  • Make sure throughout the day to drink water. Because coffee can clean you out, you need to keep yourself hydrated the rest of the day.
  • Something I do to suppress nausea is eating a small breakfast of low-fat yogurt or a ½ of a bagel. You’re more likely to feel nauseous on an empty stomach.
  • If you’re considered high risk when it comes to heart rate, blood pressure, or if you’re pregnant – this is not a safe option for you.

So, there are your pros and cons of drinking black coffee to aid in weight loss. My experience has been a good one. Coffee is a safe alternative, as long as you still keep other health components going on in your diet. Also, don’t drink your coffee like it’s a protein shake. Drink it in the morning and give it time to work its magic, eat some breakfast, then head to the workout center. Trying to run or do core workouts will make you feel dizzy when all your body is running on is coffee.

Drinking black coffee has been a bit of a miracle worker for me. Yet, if your goal is to lose more than 10 lbs., you need to do more than drink it. Have a fitness plan, take your vitamins, and drink lots of water. Keep your chin up and your smile on. Don’t give up, even when the scale isn’t changing. Everything good in life takes time, and when that time is up, you’ll get to free your stomach in a cute crop top or bikini. As for me, I still have five more pounds to go!
